We do not have many catholic schools in Barbados. Our children’s education requires additional time to teach them the catholic faith. This is the reason for having Sunday school. The St. Dominic’s catechetical program (Sunday School) usually caters to about 130-150 young persons from 3 years to 16 years. The program runs from September to June, coinciding with the school year.
To be registered as a candidate for the First Communion program, you must be 7 years or older. Candidates receive a textbook, catechism and must bring a bible. A copy of their baptismal certificate and a small monetary contribution to the book are required.
We try very hard to make the classes interesting and enjoyable for these young persons. After a one year course of study, the candidates receive First Holy Communion. Parents and guardians are asked to attend three meetings and video presentations throughout the year. The first video explains Baptism, the second, Reconciliation and the third, the Eucharist. The students participate in a one day retreat which is usually fun for them.
