Assembly Day
It was 5 o’clock Sunday morning April 18th and there was a heavy downpour of rain. Our long dry spell seemed to have broken. Someone must have asked the Holy Spirit to intervene because in half an hour the rain stopped and by 6 o’clock there was bright sunshine. We worshipped and worked in perfect weather.
It was an important day in the life of the St. Dominic’s Parish, its parishioners and the Pallottine Fathers. It was their first Parish Assembly. The day was the result of months of planning. Following Mass at 8, the meeting started shortly after 9 o’clock. Father Luke gave a review of their stewardship since arrival. The congregation would break down into committees and this was followed by a preview of how the Committees would function. The Church could be described as ‘comfortably full’. There was a mid morning break for a sandwich brunch under a long tent that had been erected bordering the east side of the car park. Over 200 chairs provided adequate seating. On the south side another tent displayed an unlimited variety of sandwiches arranged on tables and there was coffee and soft drinks. After lunch parishioners were divided into 13 sub committees. The Chairmen had already been decided upon and each person was given a number. These numbers were displayed along the side of the tent. The groups formed around their numbers. It was a simple arrangement, easy to follow and well planned. The work of the Committees was in two parts. Each Committee was asked to consider the same agenda to obtain the greatest variety of suggestions. There was duplication of course but it also produced many other useful ideas. Parishioners then returned to the church and each Chairman gave a report on the ideas and suggestions that had emerged in the various Committees There was time to complete the discussions and for each Chairman to report on the highlights of the decisions and finish their reports by 2 pm, truly a remarkable achievement. (Paul Foster) Parish Priest's word
[...] It is fantastic to live in Barbados but it is not easy to be a catholic parish priest in Barbados.
First, I would like to mention a few words about the Pallottine Fathers (Pallottines). You should know more about us since we may stay longer in St. Dominic and Barbados. The Pallottines were encouraged by the Vatican and invited by Archbishop Rivas to come to Barbados. Our mission is very simple. We have to support the Catholic Church in Barbados. We come as a religious community. The provincial superior who had primarily received our consent has appointed us for this mission. We are not better or more perfect than our fellow priests are in our Province (400 members). We are just normal priests. We may stay here as long as the bishop and our superior allow us. We have no contracts. We may be transferred anywhere at any time without any reason, but the Province will provide the replacement, until the agreement with the bishop is valid. Although we have different responsibilities in Barbados we act as a community, we do not have private careers. We have a local superior (the rector), who coordinates community life and our activities within the diocese. This year we expect a new priest to join us. Fr. Andrew (jr) who will arrive with me from Poland on Tuesday 6th July. It was decided that he would, for few months, be separated from us for pastoral, cultural and language practice in St. Lucia. He should be ready to start his duties in Barbados for the feast of St. Vincent Pallotti 2011, or earlier.[...] |
