First Communion
Hi welcome to St. Dominic Roman Catholic Church (St. Dominic’s) website. You have opened the link to our First Communion page and we hope the information provide below will be of assistance to you.
Barbados is not a Catholic country and therefore Catholic culture, customs and traditions are not integrated into our society. This means that, for the most part, our children do not go to Catholic school and therefore do not have the opportunity to live an ‘everyday’ Catholic life. We therefore encourage parents to take full advantage of the catechetical programs that are offered at St. Dominic’s; one of which is First Communion.
The First Communion program we use at St. Dominic’s is the Catechist of the Good Shepherd this is a Montessori based style of teaching. This program is Bible and Liturgy based. Thus, the subject matter being taught in the Atrium (classroom) directly parallels what is happening in church at Mass throughout the year. The children therefore experience first-hand what is being taught in Atrium. We also encourage a strong parent participation in their preparation process as we strongly believe that Parents are the Primary Teachers of their child’s faith: Faith is a life journey and the example parents set at home by what they do and say will influence more strongly the importance of God to the child’s life than can ever be achieved in Atrium. We recognize and acknowledge that the child already has a relationship with God. It is an instinctive knowing that they have, we are there to help them give it a voice.
To register for First Communion your child must be 7 years of age by September of the same year. A copy of the child’s Baptism Certificate, a colour photo of the child and a contribution of Bds. $100 for the year to cover materials costs is required. Classes are held on Saturdays or Sundays (see form below) and are one hour and thirty minutes in length over one year and we follow the normal school terms.
